REV Endurance Sports
San Marcos, CA
What is the name of the owner of your shop?
George Vargas – Owned and operated.
How did you get into cycling, personally?
As young teenagers, my brother and I would ride the long way to the beach in Miami. We thought 20 miles was a long ride back then. I did some recreational riding as an adult and in 2003, at 38 years old, I really started training and racing – first 100 milers and then 200 milers.
In 2006, I started ultra cycling – doing solo 500 milers with 35,000 feet of climbing and then raced RAAM in 2007. I have done 70 plus 200 milers, 12 - 500 milers (one year on a fixed gear and a few on a tandem), multiple Super Randonneur series, and gravel races like the 2009 Trans Iowa 330 mile (unsupported ) – I really wished I would have had an Outback!
I am a Hall of Fame member of two endurance cycling organizations.
For how many years has your shop been in business?
I opened REV Endurance Sports in 2013. Prior to that, I worked in numerous shops as a salesperson, bike fitter, and as general manager of multiple-location bike shops.
What is your shop’s mission statement?
REV Endurance Sports is dedicated to empowering cyclists through personalized custom bike builds and expert service. We believe that every rider deserves a bike that reflects their unique goals, personalities, and aspirations. Our mission is to enhance the cycling experience by providing tailored solutions, fostering a community of endurance enthusiasts, and promoting a sustainable, active lifestyle. Together, we aim to inspire performance, passion, and progress on every ride.
What makes your shop different than other shops?
Customers work directly with the owner, a passionate cyclist like themselves. I actually ride what I sell and sell what I ride. I thoroughly evaluate products, frames, wheels, components, etc – riding over 10,000 miles per year and climb 1,000,000 feet yearly – before I feel confident recommending them to my customers.
Why did you choose to carry Ritchey products?
I find I have a lot of similarities with Tom Ritchey. I am a one-man shop. I design all my own clothing and accessories. I designed my own nutrition line because I couldn't find what to use on my epic rides. I make all the decisions for the business. My philosophies are very much in line with Tom's and by extension Jobst Brandt.
I want frames and components that work – no frills, no bells and whistles. I want reliable products to go on epic rides and come home under my own power. The simpler the design the better – external cables, rim brakes, steel frames, etc. If I can get home, then I know my customers can get home too.
What is your favorite Ritchey product?
The Ritchey Road Logic. Considering I have many bikes (over 10), I have logged over 25,000 miles between two Road Logics – and very recently a new Break-Away.
Shop Rides & Events
Shop rides are by invitation only. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays. Days, times, and routes vary but they are always very challenging. Like a Jobst ride, you must have a properly operating bike, all your own repair items, and be able to get home under your own power. Saturdays are long epic days with over 10,000 feet of climbing.
